Herjólfstown Westman Islands
Herjólfstown is a small exhibition inside a replica of one of the first stone houses in Iceland and tells the story about the first viking family that settled in Westman Islands around the year 900. The exhibition is based on the sources, stories and hypotheses that have existed, some scenarios and stories are certainly fictitious, but still possible based on the available data. This exhibition is designed with great interest and deep passion for the story. All the animals in the exhibition, died from accidents or illness.
Settlement book is the oldest record of the settlement of Iceland. In one version of the book, Hauksbók, Herjólfur was said to be the first settler in Westman Islands. He settled in Herjólfsdal, in the 10th century, and there have been many theories about where in the valley this first settlement was located.
Archaeologist Margrét Hermanns-Auðardóttir began excavating in Herjólfsdal in the summer of 1971 and worked there for a total of five summers. During the research, it was found that the settlement in Herjólfsdal seems to be much older than previously thought, or from the early 9th century. Herjólfstown is considered to be the first stone house in i Westman Islands.
