A  living Viking story in Herjólfsdalur

Herjólfstown Westman Islands is a reconstructed turf farm and a living exhibition. Visitors experience everyday Viking life around the year 900. The exhibition is based on archaeological findings, historical research and accounts from Landnámabók. It combines culture, craftsmanship and nature in a unique experience.

About the exhibition and the reconstructed farm

Herjólfstown Westman Islands is a reconstruction of a Viking farm based on excavations in Herjólfsdalur. The turf buildings and layout show how the first settlers may have lived and worked in the 10th century. The story is told through characters and short narratives that make the visit vivid and accessible for all ages.

Historical background

Archaeological excavations began in 1924 and continued into the 20th century. They revealed remains of eight buildings in Herjólfsdalur. These findings formed the basis for the reconstruction of Herjólfstown. They also shed light on the early settlement of the Westman Islands. Herjólfstown Westman Islands builds on these sources and shows how a Viking community may have looked.

Life in Herjólfsdalur – characters and daily life

In the exhibition Life in Herjólfsdalur, visitors meet full-sized figures of Herjólfur Bárðarson, his family and their slaves. The display includes Herjólfur, his wife Freyja and their children Vilborg, Melkorka, Flóki and Ásvör. It also shows the slaves Kormákur and Imma. Herjólfstown Westman Islands highlights daily life, household crafts, community and the close link between people and nature during the Viking Age.
