The Thorbergur  Museum (Þórbergssetur) is dedicated to one of Iceland’s most prominent authors in the 20st century, Þórbergur Þórðarson (1888-1974). The centre is dedicated to his life and work, is easily recognizable due to the gigantic books that adorn one of its outside walls. It’s an adventurous place to visit for travellers of all ages. In addition to providing an insight into the career of  Þórbergur the centre sheds light on the history of the remote countryside in which he grew up.

Þórbergur was raised at Hali, where the centre now stands, between roaring glacial rivers in the shadow of Iceland’s largest glacier. The community was cut off from the outside world, but French schooners on the horizon gave the boy a sense of adventure. He loved stories and was determined to become a writer despite poverty.

Above Hali stands a memorial about Þórbergur and his brothers, Steinþór and Benedikt. Two walking trails have been marked from the memorial, one to the west and another to the east. It’s possible to play a fun orienteering game while walking in this stunning environment. Walk on your own or with a guide. Longer guided walking tours are also available.

In addition to the culture centre, a country hotel, souvenir shop and restaurant serving food from local farmers are operated at Hali.

Ten ideas for recreation in the regions close to Vatnajökull glacier:

  1. Sail between the icebergs on Jökulsárlón lagoon or lesser-known Fjallsárlón.
  2. Walk between sparkling “diamonds” – melting icebergs on the black sands of Breiðamerkursandur.
  3. Go on an excursion of the mighty glacier itself with a local tour operator, on foot or skis, by snowmobile or super jeep. Ice cave tour is a must!
  4. Experienced hikers can join a tour to climb Hvannadalshnjúkur, Iceland’s highest peak.
  5. Go on a birdwatching tour to Ingólfshöfði cape.
  6. Visit Skaftafell, which is part of Vatnajökull National Park. Hike up to the spectacular Svartifoss waterfall or join a guided glacier hiking tour sold on site.
  7. Try mountain biking in the beautiful green nature around Kirkjubæjarklaustur
  8. Visit Lakagígar (Laki), series of craters that were formed 1783-84, in one of the world’s largest mixed eruptions in recorded history (565 km2 and 12 m3), 50 km north of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.
  9. Try the outdoor hot tubs at Hoffell, near Höfn.
  10. Drop by Höfn for the Art Museum, mineral collection and delicious lobster.
