Elliðaárdalur – a natural gem in the city

The valley is known for its diverse landscape, geology and vegetation, where rich birdlife and wildlife thrive. The Elliðaá rivers are the only salmon rivers located within city limits anywhere in the world, and the area also contains archaeological remains from early settlement and relics from the Second World War.

The power station that changed Reykjavík

Commissioned in 1921, the Elliðaá power station marked the beginning of electrification in Reykjavík. The arrival of electricity transformed daily life for residents and laid the foundations for modern utilities, engineering and urban development. Today, the focus has shifted from harnessing the river’s energy to inspiring human creativity and curiosity.

Guided tours at the Station

Groups are welcome to book a guided visit to Elliðaá Power Station. The tour, available in Icelandic or English, offers insight into the history of the station, the valley and the city’s energy systems. Tours take place on weekdays between 13:00 and 17:00 by appointment and last 45–60 minutes.

The minimum group size for guided tours is 10 people.
