Hofsstaðir Historic Park

RuinsVikings
An impressive Viking-Age longhouse stood at Hofsstaðir from the Settlement period (AD 870-930) until the twelfth century.  The historic park aims to give an impression of Hofsstaðir at that time: turf walls show the outer limit of the longhouse during its final phase, and remains of a large enclosure have been left untouched. Excavations were carried out at Hofsstaðir in 1994-2000.
.
Turf walls show the outlines of the longhouse during its last construction phase when it was 30 meters long and 8 meters wide (98×26 feet). The longhouse had a stave construction and possibly a loft with wood panels likely covering the inside walls. Hofsstaðir was a manor farm of 20–30 people and notable artifacts have been discovered on site, including a bronze broach.

NB: Interactive multimedia about the Historic Park at Hofsstaðir is not available at the moment but is in review.
