The story of the collection and its founder

Old Icelandic Books was founded by Eyþór Guðmundsson, who has dedicated his life to collecting and preserving rare books and manuscripts. Eyþór grew up at Beitistaðir in Leirársveit, where the printing press of the National Enlightenment Society operated from 1815–1819. Many rare Icelandic books were printed there.

From a young age, Eyþór heard stories from older generations — from his grandparents and local people who had lived through changing times. These stories sparked his interest in books and cultural heritage.
