A Historic Church Site on Iceland’s North-East Coast

Sauðaneshús stands at one of the most significant historic church sites in the region, approximately 7 km north of Þórshöfn on the Langanes peninsula. The site has been inhabited since early times and has played an important role in the local community for centuries.

The Oldest Stone House in Þingeyjarsýsla

Built in 1879 from local basalt stone, Sauðaneshús is considered the oldest stone house in the Þingeyjar district. It is a rare example of Icelandic stone architecture and offers valuable insight into the craftsmanship and building traditions of the nineteenth century.

Carefully Restored to Its Former Glory

After residential use ended around 1957, Sauðaneshús stood empty for several decades. Restoration began around 1990, with the building reconstructed stone by stone and plank by plank. The project took eleven years to complete and successfully returned the house to its original appearance.

The Exhibition „Making a Living from the Cliffs“

Today, the house is home to the exhibition Að sækja björg í björg („Making a Living from the Cliffs“). The exhibition explores life on Langanes during the period when the house was inhabited. Visitors learn how people relied on the area’s natural resources and adapted to the challenges of a remote and demanding environment.

Life and Work at Sauðanes

The exhibition paints a vivid picture of the people who lived and worked at Sauðanes. It explores the role of the clergy residence, daily household activities and the close relationship between local people and nature. Driftwood, birdlife and the harvesting of resources from the sea cliffs were all essential to everyday survival.

The Natural Environment That Shaped the Community

The dramatic landscapes of Langanes have always influenced life in the area. Exhibits highlight local birdlife, weather conditions and the ingenuity with which residents made use of the resources provided by the land and sea.

Part of the Historic Buildings Collection of the National Museum of Iceland

Sauðaneshús forms part of the Historic Buildings Collection of the National Museum of Iceland. The site is managed by Menningarmiðstöð Þingeyinga, which welcomes visitors and oversees operations. The house is open during the summer season, and group visits can also be arranged by appointment.

Refreshments in Historic Surroundings

Sauðaneshús also features a cosy café where visitors can enjoy refreshments in a unique historic setting before continuing their journey around the Langanes peninsula.
