The Geothermal Exhibition

BuildingsEnergyGeologyIndustryNature

The Geothermal Exhibition invites visitors to experience first-hand how renewable energy is produced at Iceland’s largest geothermal power plant, ON Power’s Hellisheiði plant. The plant produces electricity for Iceland’s national grid and hot water for the capital region.

Visitors are invited to learn about the history of geothermal resources and sustainable energy in Iceland through a variety of displays. The exhibition allows guests to see into the turbine halls of the power plant, look over the working area, enjoy interactive and educational displays, and learn about the exciting innovative projects happening in and around the plant.

This includes Carbfix – where CO₂ is turned into stone! – and other companies operating within ON Power’s Geothermal Park.

Geothermal resources have been a part of Icelandic history and culture since the age of Settlement in the 9th century. Learn how the Geothermal Culture of the island is part of the nation’s past, present, and future, from affordable energy to fresh produce to outdoor swimming pools and hot pots.

The plant sits at the base of the Hengill mountain range, surrounded by mountain views and moss-covered lava fields. Enjoy the natural scenery while chatting with our experienced Science Communicators – and don’t forget to explore the local hiking trails above the plant!

We are the first stop in the South Region of Iceland and along the Volcanic Way, 25 km from Reykjavík on the main road heading towards Hveragerði, Selfoss, and the Golden Circle.

We recommend visitors bringing their own smartphones and headphones to fully enjoy the audio guide.
