A Magnificent Turf Farm in the Heart of Aðaldalur

Grenjaðarstaður in Aðaldalur is one of Iceland’s largest turf farms and stands on a historic estate that once served as both a church site and a vicarage. The oldest part of the farmhouse dates to 1865, and people lived there until 1949. As a settlement-era farm, it played an important role in the region’s history.

A Historic Folk Museum with an Authentic Atmosphere

Today, Grenjaðarstaður is a folk museum displaying more than a thousand artefacts that illustrate everyday life and work in centuries past. Visitors walking through the turf farmhouse will see how the rooms and furnishings reflect the lifestyle of its residents during the 19th and 20th centuries. Preserved in its original form, the farmhouse creates a strong connection to Iceland’s rural past.

Craftsmanship, Household Artefacts and Cultural Heritage

The museum features a diverse collection of artefacts from the farming communities of Aðaldalur. Household items, tools, textiles and handicrafts showcase the creativity and daily lives of local people. The exhibitions allow visitors to imagine life in the turf farmhouse during a period that feels both distant and surprisingly familiar.

Hlöðuloftið Visitor Facilities and Local Crafts

The upper floor of the service building on the site, known as Hlöðuloftið, offers visitor facilities including toilets, refreshments and a shop selling Icelandic handicrafts. Guests can enjoy a break and browse quality products inspired by the cultural heritage of the region.
