The story of the leader of the 19th‑century Icelandic independence movement

The Jón Sigurðsson Museum at Hrafnseyri is a unique destination where visitors learn about the life, work and legacy of Jón Sigurðsson, the leader of the 19th‑century Icelandic independence movement. At Hrafnseyri in Arnarfjörður, nature, history and culture meet to create a living whole that helps guests understand Iceland’s independence movement in a new, personal way.

Exhibition on Jón Sigurðsson

The exhibition on Jón Sigurðsson was renewed in the summer of 2025. Basalt Architects originally designed it in 2011 to mark the 200th anniversary of Jón’s birth. The exhibition presents Jón’s story in a layered and visual way that highlights the drama and depth of his life.

It explores cultural currents, technological change and historical events that shaped Jón’s thinking and work. Texts, images and objects form a continuous narrative that appeals to visitors of all ages.
