Iceland’s Oldest Active Viking Club

The Viking Club Rimmugýgur in Hafnarfjörður is the oldest and largest active Viking organisation in Iceland. Founded in 1997, the club takes its name from the famous axe of Skarphéðinn Njálsson in the Saga of Burnt Njáll. It aims to promote interest in the Viking Age, its culture and the origins of the Icelandic people through live demonstrations, craftsmanship and martial arts.

Focus Areas of Rimmugýgur

The club’s activities rest on three main pillars: combat training, clothing production and craftsmanship that reflect the Viking Age. Members emphasise accurate reconstruction of weapons, clothing and equipment, following historical sources as closely as possible. Combat training is regular and teaches both technique and discipline, qualities that characterised Viking warriors.

Participation in Viking Festivals

Rimmugýgur has taken part in numerous Viking festivals across Iceland and abroad. The club has been a key participant in the Hafnarfjörður Viking Festival from the beginning and has organised and run the festival since 2018. Members perform combat demonstrations, showcase craftsmanship, stage theatrical scenes and present daily life in the Viking Age in an engaging and lively way.

Exhibitions and Educational Events

The club also offers a wide range of exhibitions and educational experiences for tourists, companies, schools and various events. Visitors can explore the Viking Age through weapon displays, craftsmanship, storytelling and live demonstrations that recreate the atmosphere and culture of the period.

Rimmugýgur as Part of Living Heritage Culture

With decades of experience, strong community involvement and a passion for historical reconstruction, the Viking Club Rimmugýgur has earned an important place in Icelandic cultural life. The club continues to share knowledge, inspire interest in the past and create a living connection to the Viking Age for both Icelandic and international visitors.
